What is Candlewood?

Candlewood Estates takes its name from the magnificent candlewood plant, an Arizona native species. Also commonly referred to as ocotillo or coach whip, candlewood’s scientific name is fouquieria splendens. Reaching 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide, the plant’s nectar-filled reddish-orange flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds. Though the candlewood’s long canes are lined with sharp spines, it is not a cactus. Leafless much of the year, the candlewood’s canes leaf-out readily after a rain. In full bloom, it is one of the most spectacular sights in the Sonoran Desert.
